Simu Liu just received the best birthday present ever. To celebrate the actor’s thirty second birthday, Marvel Studios released the trailer for his upcoming superhero debut Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. This is the first look we’ve gotten of Shang-Chi otherwise known as the Master of Kung Fu. The trailer implies that while Shang-Chi is trying to live a normal life in America, his past as a trained assassin continually calls to him. Thus, he is pulled into an adventure that will make him a bonafide superhero. It is very clear that Phase Four is introducing us to a whole new crop of lovable heroes to fill in the empty spots left in the Avengers after the events of Endgame.

From the short trailer alone fans have already fallen in love with Simu Liu’s portrayal of the character. This film offers a look at Shang-Chi’s fun loving side with quick clips of him singing karaoke with friends or taking selfies. When he is called back to his homeland we can see that his friends have joined on the adventure. Another scene that was teased in the trailer is the highly anticipated bus action sequence where Shang-Chi and his friend Katy (played by Awkwafina) desperately guide a bus through traffic. It can be safe to say that along with the other fights shown in the trailer that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will have some unforgettable moments.

Joining Simu Liu in the main cast are acting heavyweights Awkwafina, Tony Leung, Michelle Yeoh. You will definitely recognize the rising star Awkwafina from her voice acting role in Raya and the Last Dragon and her breakout turn as the quirky Peik Lin Goh in Crazy Rich Asians. Awkwafina described her character as having a big heart and her friendship with Shang-Chi being especially important to her. As for Tony Leung and Michelle Yoah, the former made his career starring in various critically acclaimed Chinese films like In the Mood for Love while the latter appeared in Crazy Rich Asians alongside Awkwafina as Henry Golding’s domineering mother. She also has flexed her martial arts skills famously in Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Leung has a particularly exciting role ahead of him as he will be playing the highly anticipated villain The Mandarin. The Mandarin is referenced via a terrorist group called The Ten Rings in the 2008 film Iron Man, the 2010 movie Iron Man 2, and the 2015 movie Ant-Man, suggesting the group consists of a clandestine cell system. Although The Mandarin was teased to be revealed in Iron Man 3 it was discovered that the villain was just a persona for British character actor Trevor Slattery as the idealized image of Tony Stark’s enemy Aldrich Killian. However, nearly eight years after Iron Man 3 the real Mandarin will finally be showing himself to audiences.

Despite COVID concerns it seems that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will premiere on its intended September 3, 2021 release date. It is expected to have a traditional theatrical release rather than be released simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+ with Premier Access like Black Widow. Either way, we’re happy to finally be experiencing the story of Shang-Chi and are excited to see just how he is introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
