“the message that I would hope people take from emma in this film is to not judge a book by its cover and to check in on people. just because you have good grades, you’re the head cheerleader or vice president of the school, it doesn’t mean everything’s fine.” – JL 🤍 #moxie pic.twitter.com/p1cuxHdZEV

There’s A LOT that happens in Moxie, here are some of our favorite things about it:

The Relationship Between Vivian and her Mother
Vivian and Lisa, played by Amy Poehler, have a dynamic that we loved! Lisa respected her daughter’s space as an individual, allowing her to feel free to express herself and make decisions on her own. But she wasn’t afraid to step in and provide support and guidance when Vivian began to spiral. It’s nice to see a mother-daughter relationship that doesn’t boil the relationship down to “overbearing mom” or “rebellious daughter.”
Also,, thank you Claudia, her sacrifice I stg 🥺🥺 #moxie pic.twitter.com/pEoyTNsMB8

The Importance of Intersectional Feminism
Vivian’s best friend Claudia, played by Lauren Tsai, is Chinese-American, which causes Claudia to feel a lot of pressure. At one point, she tells Vivian that Vivian can’t understand what she’s going through because Vivian is white. Claudia’s life and experiences are different from Vivian’s, and the movie doesn’t shy away from talking about that. An important part of feminism is understanding that it doesn’t look like one thing, and that intersectionality is important, which was great to see in Moxie!

Complicated Female Relationships
It’s also refreshing to see complicated, positive relationships between women. While aligned by the goal of calling out sexism at their school, the Moxie girls aren’t carbon copies of each other. They have their own unique identities, perspectives, and goals. The relationship and the bonds between them are complicated and dynamic, which we absolutely loved!
While these were some of our favorite moments, Moxie covers a lot more themes and topics, so be sure to check it out now on Netflix!
