Disney recently released the trailer for its latest live action feature film Cruella starring Emma Stone. The film was originally set to release on December 23, 2020, but was delayed to May 28, 2021 as filming began.
This is not the first live action version of 101 Dalmatians, the first being released in 1996 starring Glen Close as the canine killing villain.
Disney announced the trailer on their twitter with the tag line “Brilliant. Bad. A little bit mad. May 2021.”

Right away social media erupted with varying thoughts on the trailer. Many compared Stones Cruella to Joker or Harley Quinn.
Honestly going the Harley Quinn route with Cruella is lowkey genius. I think Emma Stone is about to eat it up not gonna lie. The visual style also looks a lot different than these other live action re-imaginings.

Others were worried about trying to turn Cruella into a redemption story much like Wicked and Maleficent, something that doesn’t quite hit the same when it’s someone who takes out their anger on cute little puppies.

DISNEY EXEC #1: Our live action remakes have been performing well and Maleficent has proven there’s an audience for rehabilitating a female villain!
DISNEY EXEC #2: Great, so which villain are we going to do next?

Some people didn’t care about the comparisons and were just here for the fierceness Emma Stone displayed in the trailer.

The new film isn’t where the 101 Dalmatian news ends though. The Disney movie is also being transformed into a musical that will premiere at London’s Regents Park Open Air Theatre, the same location the Dearly family resided in Dodie Smith’s book.
The musical will feature music and lyrics by Douglas Hodge, and will be directed by Timothy Sheader. It will star Olivier and Tony award nominated actress Kate Fleetwood as Cruella de Vil.
The musical will incorporate puppets to display the 101 puppies that are a main presence of the story.
The show will be on from 16th May to 21st June, and you can get tickets starting from £29 here.
Wether its on screen or live in the park, we are here for both versions of the classic tale!
