Rian Johnson spent about 15 years working and mastering Knives Out, luckily the fans won’t have to wait as long for a sequel as it has been announced that filming has already begun in Greece. While waiting to watch the sequel on your screen, here is a list of things you should pay attention to in the upcoming movie to keep up with Benoit Blanc’s brilliant detective skills.

Title

The title of the sequel has not been announced yet, however, it has been revealed that the story will not be about the Thrombey family at all. In fact, the only returning character is Benoit Blanc and the sequel will show him uncovering yet another tangled mystery. As we have seen in the original movie, the title has a lot to do with the mystery unfolding so as soon as Johnson reveals the sequel title, fans will have a chance to start their guessing game.

Location

The filming of the sequel is currently taking place in Greece, however, that does not necessarily mean that it is where the story will take place as directors often use different filming locations for monetary and convenience purposes. In Knives Out, the majority of the story unfolds in the family mansion making the house a character of its own. The mansion contains all the family members so it was not hard to guess that the killer is amongst the family. Get ready to analyze the location of the new mystery in order to place your best bets on who the killer is.

Decor

From the mug to the circle of knives, every little decor detail in Thrombey house had a significance to the mystery. When watching the sequel, you should pay close attention to the decor around the characters – couches, plates, clocks, statues, anything that seems to have suspicious significance in the characters’ lives. Always take a good look at the art on the wall – someone’s portrait may smirk at you when the mystery is finally solved.

Eyes

Eyes, the windows to your soul, can show a lot which is why Johnson makes such emphasis on them in the original movie with numerous close-ups and montages to provide the audience a chance to read through the lines themselves and find out who is telling the truth. When watching the sequel, look into the characters’ eyes and trust your intuition to judge yourself who looks guilty deep inside and who’s telling the truth.

Music

Johnson perfectly chooses score to set the tone for his murder mystery. When Martha confesses her “guilt” to Ransom in the diner, Gordon Lightfoot’s ‘Sundown” is playing with the line “If I find you’ve been creepin’ round my back stairs” especially standing out to emphasize that Martha and Ransom have more in common than it seems – specifically them both climbing the backstairs at the mansion on the murder night. Pay close attention to the music as it can give you clues to solve the case.

iPhone

Watch out for the characters who do not have iPhones. Apple does allow their products to be shown on screen in movies with one exception – evil characters are not allowed to be seen with company products. In the original movie, throughout the story we can see all the characters with iPhones or Macbooks in their hands, but not a single Apple product near Ranson. When watching the sequel, pay attention to the phones used in the movie and maybe the characters that seem to be really distant from their phones are the guilty ones.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is Johnson’s lucky charm making an appearance in all of his movies. In Knives Out, Gordon-Levitt’s voice can be heard coming from a tv series Marta and her family are watching in the beginning of the movie. Gordon-Levitt’s voice over character called Detective Hardrock thus foreshadowing Marta’s soon greeting with Blanc. Keeping tradition going, Gordon-Levitt will most likely make a cameo in the sequel and fans should keep an eye on the director’s adored actor and his character’s words and actions.

Agatha Christie

If you find some free time on your hands before watching the sequel, familiarize yourself with Agatha Christie’s work as her character Hercule Poirot is the main inspiration for Johnson’s Benoit Blanc. In her detectives the well-known investigator solves a new mystery in a new location every book which explains Johnson’s choice to only bring back Craig from the original cast. By familiarizing yourself with Christie’s Poirot, you can understand more about Blanc and how he thinks which will put you a step ahead in solving the murder mystery yourself.

The fans luckily have a good amount of time before the sequel comes out to rewatch the original movie before jumping into Blanc’s new case. Johnson’s script full of foreshadowing, clues, and numerous Easter Eggs makes Knives Out a pleasurable and captivating rewatch as every time you notice new details and clues. The incredible all-star cast makes it even more entertaining with their witty humor and comical sarcasm. The whole cast of the sequel has not been announced yet, but we already know that Daniel Craig will be joined by Dave Bautista, Kate Hudson, Janelle Monae, Edward Norton, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, and Madelyn Cline.
