How Cameron Boyce is affecting future films

Cameron Boyce made a name for himself as a Disney Channel actor, especially for his roles as Carlos in the series “Descendents” and Luke in the TV show “Jessie”. He worked closely with Adam Sandler, starring in “Grown Ups” and “Grown Ups 2” before his death from an ongoing medical condition on July 6, 2019.

At 20 years old, Boyce made friendships and impacts that would last a lifetime. He impacted not only the shows and movies he worked on, but also the lives of those he worked with. One great example of this is the new “Descendents’ ‘ movie that will be coming out on August 13th and it’s tribute to the late Disney star.

“Descendents 3” was scheduled to release on August 2nd, 2019, a month after Boyce’s death. The musical was completely finalized and on its release offered tribute to Cameron Boyce in the credits, dedicating the third installment to him. The movie series was said to have four movies planned out, but with the loss of a major character, production was put on hold and rumoured to not pick back up.

This was similar to rumours about Sandler’s final installment of “Grownups 3”. Even though Cameron Boyce played a supporting role, the third movie was never filmed after news of his death.

The difference between the two is that the fourth installment of Descendents will be released mid-August, but with a twist. “Descendents: The Royal Wedding” will not be a live action musical like the three prior, instead it will be an animated movie and will not feature Carlos’ character.

Disney Channel has also confirmed: “The absence of the character Carlos, played by the late Cameron Boyce, will be acknowledged in the storyline and Boyce’s memory will be honored in the telecast.”

The animated new installment of the series will feature all of the returning characters as voice actors instead of live action roles. Even though it hasn’t been confirmed, the return of the series to an animated film appears to rely heavily on the absence of Cameron Boyce and bringing something new to the series.

This could have something to do with his co-stars’ influence on what they are comfortable with. “Descendants” star Dove Cameron posts yearly tributes for her friend and co-star and has said previously that she “is reluctant to continue the movie franchise without Cameron Boyce”

This is not a shock, as soon after Boyce’s death, some of the core cast of Jessie: Peyton List, Skai Jackson, and Karan Brar, decided to quit filming “Bunk’d” – the Disney Channel summer camp spin-off to “Jessie”. The original cast did not want to renew for any more seasons after Boyce’s death out of respect. Now, “Bunk’d” has a brand new cast and storyline on Disney Channel.

Adam Sandler also recast and dedicated his 2020 Halloween movie to Boyce as well.

Adam Sandlers’ “Hubie Halloween”, which came out October 2020, began filming in July 2019, later in the same month Cameron Boyce died. The filming continued despite Boyce being casted to play a major role as the “neighborhood bully”. Sandler recast the role to Karan Brar and invited other members of the “Jessie” cast to play minor roles and dedicate the movie to Boyce out of respect and devotion to him as an actor and a friend.

Cameron Boyce passed away before getting the chance to finish projects he was a part of, but the industry and his co-stars have made sure that he is not forgotten when they are released. As “Descendants: The Royal Wedding” is set to premiere within the coming weeks, Disney Channel and Cameron Boyce fans can look forward to the series reaching a finale and honoring an actor who was taken too young.
