Les Miserables Broadway Discussion with BroadwayWorld’s Robert Diamond – Broadway Breakdown

Hosts Briana Phipps & Jacque Borowski discuss the Broadway Musical Les Miserables with special guest Robert Diamond of Broadwayworld.com.

Les Misérables (pronounced /l ˌmɪzəˈrɑːb/ or /l ˈmɪzəˌrɑːb/; French pronunciation: [le mizeʁabl(ə)]) is aFrench historical novel by Victor Hugo, first published in 1862, that is considered one of the greatest novelsof the 19th century. In the English-speaking world, the novel is usually referred to by its original French title. However, several alternatives have been used, including The Miserables, The Wretched, The Miserable Ones, The Poor Ones, The Wretched Poor, The Victims and The Dispossessed. Beginning in 1815 and culminating in the 1832 June Rebellion in Paris, the novel follows the lives and interactions of several characters, particularly the struggles of ex-convict Jean Valjean and his experience of redemption.

Examining the nature of law and grace, the novel elaborates upon the history of France, the architecture and urban design of Paris, politics, moral philosophy, antimonarchism, justice, religion, and the types and nature of romantic and familial love. Les Misérables has been popularized through numerous adaptations for the stage, television, and film, including a musical and a film adaptation of that musical.

The appearance of the novel was highly anticipated and advertised. Critical reactions were diverse, but most of them were negative. Commercially, the work was a great success globally.

Xanadu (2007) Broadway Musical Review | Broadway Breakdown

Hosts Briana Phipps & Jacque Borowski discuss the 2007 Broadway Musical Xanadu with special guests Edward Carter Simon & Tiffany Michaela Jones.

Xanadu is a musical comedy with a book by Douglas Carter Beane and music and lyrics by Jeff Lynne and John Farrar, based on the 1980 cult classic film of the same name, which was, in turn, inspired by the 1947 Rita Hayworth film Down to Earth,[1] a sequel to the 1941 movie Here Comes Mr. Jordan, which was an adaptation of the play Heaven Can Wait byHarry Segall. The title is a reference to the poem Kubla Khan, or A Vision in a Dream. A Fragment, by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Xanadu is the name of the Chinese province where Khan establishes his pleasure garden in the poem.

The musical opened on Broadway in 2007 and ran for over 500 performances. It earned an Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical and a Drama Desk Award for Best Book. It was also nominated for Tony Awards for Best Musical and Best Book. The US Tour officially began on December 15, 2009, in the Orange County Performing Arts Center. A Korean production has opened, and a national tour and several foreign productions are planned.
