Crazy Rich Asians: Selena Tan Interview | Anatomy of a Movie

Hosts Phil Svitek (@PhilSvitek) & Marisa Serafini (@SerafiniTV) interview Crazy Rich Asian’s Selena Tan!

Selena Tan is an award-winning actress, producer, director, writer, and performer. She was one of the first Singaporeans to be cast in the upcoming movie Crazy Rich Asians, in theaters August 15. Selena will play the role of ‘Alix Cheng’, one of Eleanor Young’s (Michelle Yeoh) sisters and Nick Young’s (Henry Golding) aunt.  Brought up by her family to be modest and reserved, she is the less showy of her sisters—coming across as a bit of a miser—and often adopts self-deprecation. Nevertheless, she is the real architect of her family’s fortune in Hong Kong—channelling every cent of her husband’s considerable earnings into properties in Hong Kong just as the housing boom was taking off.

Selena started her career as a stand-up comedian and has over 24 years of experience in theater. In 2000, Selena started Dream Academy, one of Singapore’s first private limited Arts Entertainment companies. She is best known for their well-loved brands including Happily Ever Laughter and the Dim Sum Dollies.

She has appeared in international films such as Rogue Trader opposite Ewan McGregor and Anna Friel.  She is an ambassador for the LGBTQ+ movement, Pink Dot, which focuses on the support for the freedom to love. She currently resides in Singapore.

You can view her Instagram here.

Rachel Chu is happy to accompany her longtime boyfriend, Nick, to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore. She’s also surprised to learn that Nick’s family is extremely wealthy and he’s considered one of the country’s most eligible bachelors. Thrust into the spotlight, Rachel must now contend with jealous socialites, quirky relatives and something far, far worse — Nick’s disapproving mother.
