Comment and Rate us on iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/profiles/id908850713?mt=2 Today it’s all about Robert Altman! Robert Bernard Altman was an American film director, screenwriter, and producer. A five-time nominee of the Academy Award for Best Director and an enduring figure from the New Hollywood era, Altman was considered a “maverick” in making films that are highly naturalistic, but with a stylized perspective unlike most Hollywood films. He is consistently ranked as one of the greatest and most influential filmmakers in history. His style of filmmaking was unique among directors, in that his subjects covered most genres, but with a “subversive” twist that typically relies on satire and humor to express his personal vision. Altman developed a reputation for being “anti-Hollywood” and non-conformist in both his themes and directing style. However, actors especially enjoyed working under his direction because he encouraged them to improvise, thereby inspiring their own creativity. He preferred large ensemble casts for his films, and developed a multitrack recording technique which produced overlapping dialogue from multiple actors. This produced a more natural, more dynamic, and more complex experience for the viewer. He also used highly mobile camera work and zoom lenses to enhance the activity taking place on the screen. Critic Pauline Kael, writing about his directing style, said that Altman could “make film fireworks out of next to nothing.” Follow Alicia on Twitter! Follow Scott on Twitter! Die Hard… is a “Guilty Movie Pleasure”

Popcorn Talk Network proudly presents a vodcast that offers a glimpse into the movies we love to watch with breakdown and analysis of the movies some might call… a “Guilty Movie Pleasure”. Rate us and Download on itunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/guilty-movie-pleasures/id909155875?mt=2 This week on GMP, Josh Macuga and Ben Begley  break down Die Hard! Die Hard is a 1988 American action film directed by John McTiernan and written by Steven E. de Souza and Jeb Stuart. It follows off-duty New York City Police Department officer John McClane (Bruce Willis) as he takes on a group of highly organized criminals led by Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman), who perform a heist in a Los Angeles skyscraper under the guise of a terrorist attack using hostages, including McClane’s wife Holly (Bonnie Bedelia), to keep the police at bay. It is based on Roderick Thorp‘s 1979 novel Nothing Lasts Forever, the sequel to 1966’s The Detective, which was adapted into a 1968 film of the same name that starred Frank Sinatra. Fox was contractually obliged to offer Sinatra the lead role in Die Hard, but he turned it down. The studio then pitched the film to Arnold Schwarzenegger as a sequel to his 1985 action film Commando, who turned it down, as did a host of the era’s action stars, and finally and reluctantly gave it to Willis, then known primarily as a comedic television actor. Made for $28 million, Die Hard grossed over $140 million theatrically worldwide, and received a positive reception from critics. The film turned Willis into an action star, became a metonym for an action film in which a lone hero fights overwhelming odds, and is now widely considered one of the greatest action movies ever made. The film spawned the Die Hard franchise, which includes four sequels, video games, and a comic book.
