Emily Robinson talks Virgin Territory on iTalk Movies

iTalk movies is a long-form interview series featuring leading members of the film community. In this episode, our host Blake V interviews Emily Robinson in studio about Virgin Territory on the Popcorn Talk Network.

Emily Robinson is a 17 year old first time filmmaker. She wrote, directed, produced and stars in her first short film, Virgin Territory.  Emily, usually in front of the camera, loved this first experience as a writer/director.  Emily knew she wanted to cast Michelle Clunie (Queer as Folk) as Harper and Mel Shimkovitz (Transparent) as Jordan. She sent them each a script, they both agreed that they loved it and wanted their respective roles. Emily committed $10,000 of her money to front the project and in September started the production process. She reviewed over 70 tapes from various cinematographers, meeting with 12 in-person to discuss the script and her vision.  It was an incredibly difficult decision, but, Kay Madsen seemed to be the perfect fit. Her first hire. Emily and her producer Debbie Von Ahrens continued the process to hire the team, went to SAG-AFTRA meetings on production, called friends and various insurance and productions companies to learn as much as possible about the process.

Filming was set for November 27, 2015, a 4 day shoot, a SAG-AFTRA short film agreement with a cast of 3 and a production team of 11. Once shot, Emily was going to do a Kickstarted campaign to help cover post-production.

Kickstarter- launched on January 27th at 10am, asking for $6,000, she had 30 days to reach that goal. The goal was reached in 5 hours!!!!! Stretch-goals were then explained and after one month $17,583 was raised on Kickstarter. Although many people that Emily knew committed to her Kickstarter campaign, there were many, including at the Associate Producer level ($2,500) that she did not know, but they follow her on social media and know her acting work.

After everything was shot, Emily continued working with Tucker Marolf in Editing, then John M. Davis on sound and Patrick Taylor for Color correction, Virgin Territory was completely finished by March 1, 2016. Since then Emily created the poster and the trailer while Debbie started submitting to the film festivals; Virgin Territory made its debut at OUTFEST Los Angeles LGBTQ Festival- July 7 – 17th.

John Ottman talks Editing/Composing X-Men: Apocalypse on iTalk Movies

Hosts @DMovies1701 & @PDSvitek interview composer/editor John Ottman. They discuss his latest projects – X-Men: Apocalypse and The Nice Guys.
Make sure to subscribe to Popcorn Talk! – http://youtube.com/popcorntalknetwork

iTalk movies is a long-form interview series featuring leading members of the film community. In this episode, our hosts Demetri Panos and Phil Svitek interview John Ottman in studio about editing and composing on some of Hollywood’s biggest films including recent movies X-Men: Apocalypse and The Nice on the Popcorn Talk Network.

John Ottman holds dual distinctions as a leading film composer and an award winning film editor. Ottman has often completed both monumental tasks on the same films. Such remarkable double duties have included The Usual Suspects, X-Men 2, Superman Returns, Valkyrie, and Jack the Giant Killer. He has also held producer roles on several of these films, as well as directing, editing and scoring Urban Legends 2.

From an early age in San Jose, California, Ottman began writing and recording radio plays on cassette tapes. He’d perform many characters with his voice (and some sound effects), and called upon his neighborhood friends as extra cast members.

By the fourth grade, Ottman was playing the clarinet and continued doing so throughout high school. But his real concentration turned from audio productions to making films. He turned his parents’ garage into a movie studio, where multiple sets were interchangeable to accommodate productions – invariably some sort of science fiction film. By high school, his films evolved to hour-long productions complete with large sets and lavish scores edited together from his favorite soundtracks.

Having been a veteran of numerous short films, Ottman excelled at USC film school, receiving accolades for his direction of actors and for how masterfully he edited their performances. It was in this directing course that a graduate filmmaker asked Ottman to re-edit his thesis film. John modified the story from raw footage and also designed the film’s extensive sound. The film ended up winning the student Academy Award. On that film, Ottman met a production assistant named Bryan Singer.

Singer, only aware of Ottman’s editing (Ottman stayed awake into the wee hours learning midi gear and composing music), asked him to edit a short film starring Ethan Hawke – a childhood friend of Singer’s. Ottman ended up co-directing the film (Lion’s Den) as well as editing and doing the sound design.

Ottman edited Singer’s first feature, Public Access. His effective sequences and editorial montages became the highlight of the picture. In the eleventh hour, the film lost its composer. Singer asked Ottman to write the score, after much prodding from the editor. Public Access received the Grand Jury Prize at the 1993 Sundance Film Festival, with the score and editing being lauded in reviews.

With The Usual Suspects and future Singer films, Ottman held to a promise that, despite his scoring dreams, he would commit to the months required to also serve as editor on Singer’s films. The wary producers of The Usual Suspects gave the go-ahead for him to both edit the complicated picture and write the score, the demands of which no one had undergone. The film was edited in Ottman’s living room on a Steinbeck flatbed and a splicer. The Usual Suspects and Ottman’s work received widespread acclaim, earning Ottman the British Academy Awards for his editing, a Saturn Award for his score, and a nomination by the American Cinema Editors.

Since then, Ottman has scored numerous films with the intent of keeping thematic film scoring alive. Ottman also made a brief foray into television for which he received an Emmy nomination (“Fantasy Island.”)

David Bloom talks Wannabe on iTalk Movies

iTalk movies is a long-form interview series featuring leading members of the film community. In this episode, our host Michael Clouse interviews David Bloom in studio about Wannabe on the Popcorn Talk Network. Hope you are having a wonderful day. I wanted to let you know that Netflix’s Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp actor David Bloom will be starring in the upcoming short film Wannabe. Including actors Malcolm Jamal-Warner (FX’s People v. O.J. Simpson) and Donis Leonard Jr. (Showtime’s House of Lies), this film will be making its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in April 2016. This film depicts a story that is deeply personal for writer / director Matthew Manson, because it is based on his own experiences growing up in New York. The film takes place during the zenith of the Crown Heights Riots, in 1990s New York City. This was a time of immense racial and political strife, and sadly, very little has changed since then. However, this film offers a spark of light that fought its way through the darkness of those times. It tells the story of Daniel (Bloom), an anxious Jewish boy, who develops a crush on his Caribbean classmate, Emefa.
