The film follows the criminal career of infamous Irish-American mobster Whitey Bulger (Depp). Principal photography of the film began on May 19, 2014 in Boston, and wrapped on August 1, 2014. The film had its world premiere at the 72nd Venice International Film Festival, and was released by Warner Bros. worldwide on September 18, 2015.
