After seeing the latest trailer for The New Mutants, X-Men writer Chris Claremont is hopeful the new movie will reveal more details of the comics.

“I think this one dealt more with the plot than the first one. The first one was just sort of a teaser. It’s a challenge because I’m not sure how much of the story will end up integrated into the film. I have my fingers crossed,” said Claremont.

Claremont guested on the  latest episode of Marvel TV Weekly with hosts Christian Bladt and Xia Anderson. Claremont is best known for his 17 year run writing X-Men for Marvel Comics. He is also the co-creator of The New Mutants.

He also shared that he has a vision for a film that would reunite “Game of Thrones” starts Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner, teaming up their characters Wolfsbane and Jean Grey.

“I have a concept, a giggle concept, for a screen pitch of Jean and Rahne teaming up … of getting Maisie and Sophie together for what I think will be a fun adventure…but then you have to accept the fact that even if they greenlit it today, it would be 2022,” shared Claremont.

The New Mutants follows Magik, Wolfsbane and other teenage mutants try to come to grips with their superpowers while staying at a secret facility.

In the interview, Claremont also discussed his approach to originally creating those characters in 1982.

“The approach we were bringing to it which was fundamentally different was that they’re kids,” said Claremont. “What everyone forgets is that by the time the New Mutants came along, the X-Men had been around a good long time… and we knew everything about them. They’d all grown up. They were adults. These are kids. These are the first step down the road to becoming whatever the X-Men or whomever they become. And our hope was to show it from the perspective of we don’t know what the hells happening to us, where are we going with this, we are scared and who can help us? Can anyone help us?”

Before the interview wrapped, Claremont also conceded how Hugh Jackman is perfect for the role of Wolverine, but admitted he wasn’t the first choice.

“Technically, Hugh Jackman looks nothing like Logan, but when you meet Hugh Jackman, when you see him perform the role, there’s no point in arguing, he’s got it nailed,” said Claremont. “My original choice 30 years ago was Bob Hoskins because he was short and scary, and he could do it”

We’ll have to see if Claremont’s hope is fulfilled when the movie makes it to the big screen April 3rd, 2020.
