Wes Anderson is an Academy Award winning writer and director, best known for his quirky style and beautiful cinematography. The oft-referenced filmmaker has many must watch films, and with today being the anniversary of one such film, Fantastic Mr. Fox, now is the perfect time to get caught up on his best work. Here are the top five Wes Anderson films that you should watch now!

  1. Wes Anderson’s most recent film is Isle of Dogs (2018), a stop motion film that is set in a dystopian future in Japan. The subjects of the piece are dogs who are banished to an island to fend for themselves due to an outbreak of a canine flu — the movie follows a boy who must find his own dog on said island. The film has an ensemble cast of voice actors featuring huge names such as Bill Murray, Jeff Goldblum, Tilda Swinton, and even Yoko Ono! Although the film was criticized for its long run time and iffy use of Japanese culture, it still earned a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, two Academy Award nominations, and the hearts of many viewers. Fun fact: if you say Isle of Dogs out loud, it sounds like you’re saying “I love dogs”!

  1. Moonrise Kingdom is up next: the 2012 live action film is a heartwarming and quirky tale of an orphan boy who escapes from a scouting camp to meet his penpal girlfriend, leaving his camp friends and counselors to try and find him. A super cute tale about young love complete with gorgeous coloring and cinematography, Moonrise Kingdom is a movie you’ve gotta see!

  1. And now for the film that inspired this article, Fantastic Mr. Fox! Released in 2009, this stop motion comedy based on the Roald Dahl novel follows a fox and other animals who outwit the human farmers from whom Mr. Fox steals. The film is super fun, cute, and funny, and once again features a star studded voice cast including the likes of George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Bill Murray, Willem Dafoe, and Owen Wilson. Watch it today in honor of its anniversary, or any time you need a little pick me up!

  1. Coming in at number two is one of Anderson’s first films, The Royal Tenenbaums! The film stars Danny Glover, Gene Hackman, Anjelica Huston, Bill Murray, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Stiller, Luke Wilson, and Owen Wilson. Wilson co-wrote the film with Anderson as well! The story follows three siblings (who were gifted children but have experienced disappointing adulthoods) and their father who returns claiming he has a terminal illness after he left them in their adolescent years. This movie is definitely a must watch, and it even helped inspire Arrested Development (and many a Halloween costume)!

  1. And finally, number one has to be four-time Academy Award winner, The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014). This film, about the events inside of and surrounding the titular hotel, features a huge ensemble cast including Ralph Fiennes, Tilda Swinton, Willem Dafoe, Saoirse Ronan (The Grand Budapest Hotel was also featured in her top five films article), and more! It is a wonderful movie to watch for its amazing storytelling techniques, great acting, beautiful cinematography, and an overall fun (but also moving) time.

Wes Anderson’s next film, The French Dispatch, is set to be released in January 2021! The film will follow three storylines, about “journalists set at an outpost of an American newspaper in a fictional 20th-century French city.” Another ensemble cast effort, this film will feature Benicio Del Toro, frequent Anderson collaborators Adrien Brody and Tilda Swinton, Frances McDormand, and, yes, Timothée Chalamet. Definitely keep an eye out for this one!
