Malcolm & Marie is coming to Netflix! The romantic drama, directed by Sam Levinson, will star Zendaya and John David Washington. Shot on 35mm in black and white and filmed during quarantine, this is the first film to be completed since the pandemic began. Competition for distributing rights was fierce with competitors like HBO, A24, and Amazon watching footage from the film before making offers. However, Netflix ultimately won out in a thirty million dollar bid.

The movie is described to be similar to Marriage Story mixed with the fears and struggles of living during a pandemic. Washington will play an insecure director dealing with the aftermath of his movie premiere. This also puts strain on his wife played by Zendaya. Other than those small details, the plot is mostly unknown. We’re going to have to wait for the wide release on Netflix to get more information.

Malcolm & Marie will reunite Zendaya with Sam Levinson who also created Euphoria. Zendaya scored her very first Emmy nomination for the role of Rue Bennett in Euphoria. If Malcolm & Marie were to drop at the end of the year there might be Oscar gold in the future.

Writer and producer Levinson said to Deadline that he was “so grateful to this cast and crew, many of whom are my Euphoria family, for coming together during such uncertain times. We felt privileged to be able to make this film together and we did so with a lot of love. We are all thrilled that it has ended up with Netflix which is unparalleled in allowing filmmakers the freedom to tell their stories that reach audiences all over the world.”
