The Kissing Booth 2 is amazing and is filled with tons of hotties and heartbreak, but one of its shining achievements comes from its LGBTQ storyline between Ollie and Miles. Plus, Evan Hengs shares what’s it’s like being on set.

If you haven’t watched The Kissing Booth 2 yet, seriously what are you doing with your life?! Also, if you haven’t seen the film yet, you might not want to read on for fear of spoilers!

However, if you have watched this amazing film, you might have noticed one of my personal favorite parts of the new Netflix rom-com.

While I might have been distracted by Marco’s abs most of the time (hey Taylor Zakhar Perez), I also couldn’t help but notice how perfectly the film executed their LGBTQ storyline.

Two of the unsung heroes of this adorable high-school rom-com are Ollie and Miles, the wildly sweet lovebirds who found their way to each other throughout the course of the film.

Ollie [Judd Krok]is your not-so-typical high-school jock, who is struggling with new feelings that he doesn’t quite understand.

Miles [Evan Hengst] is the quirky and cute student council president, who doesn’t even realize he’s making Ollie feel some typa way.

The reason I loved their storyline so much is that it was extremely real-life and relatable.

Ollie is battling the feelings he has towards Miles while also fighting outside influence and the worry about what his “boys” will think of him.

Miles’ thoughts are a bit more internalized but it’s also evident that he feels some kind of spark with Ollie.

The lead up to their epic kiss and how it was portrayed was absolutely remarkable and it was perfectly fitting that they had their amazing moment at the kissing booth.

What was even more incredible than this sweet, romantic moment at the kissing booth was the fact that their moment helped our main character Elle come to her own realization about love.

Throughout the film, Elle helps Ollie navigate these new feelings he has towards Miles and when Elle sees that Ollie took the leap of faith and gave Miles the smooch of a lifetime, it showed her what (and who) she really wanted. Plus it gave her the kick in the booty to go and get it. #TeamNoahandElle.

This storyline was magnificently done for SO many reasons.

It doesn’t villainize the gay characters or make it seem like they’re taking something from the straight characters.

It shows a healthy LGBTQ relationship (not just a toxic wishy-washy one that we’re used to seeing on our screens), and it also shows how that relationship can inspire others.

It also gives us both a first and third-person perspective of this LGBTQ relationship and the struggles it takes to come to terms with who we are, who we love, and how we shouldn’t live in fear of what other people think.

As an LGBTQ person, I can’t even describe to you what this portrayal means to me. The Kissing Booth 2 did an absolutely incredible job of incorporating, explaining, and highlighting a happy and healthy LGBTQ romance, and used that storyline to further the plot of a  straight relationship.

This gives me so much hope that the entertainment industry is moving in the right direction and that we are going to see more of these epic LGBTQ romances and overall, just more love on our screens.

With The Kissing Booth 2’s wild success and the positive reactions from fans (including me) Evan Hengst, who plays Miles, told us what it was like being on set.

“Making the films never felt like work at all. We were one big family on and off set, and to be a part of something that means so much to people is a really special experience. Looking back,  it was definitely one of the best times I’ve ever had on a production.”

Hengst continues.

“I’m really grateful that I was given the opportunity to develop my character’s storyline in the sequel. Telling the story between Ollie and Miles was something we all handled with the utmost care and respect to help normalize LGBTQ love stories in actual schools. Hopefully the movie will inspire those to be truthful and kind to themselves and others.”

Thank you to Netflix, Judd Krok, Evan Hengst, Joey King, and the rest of the cast and crew of this wonderful film for fully realizing an LGBTQ storyline. You give people (like me) hope that we’ll see more of it.
