Pixar announced this week that there is a new movie in the making called Luca. The movie is a set to be based off the coast of the Italian Riviera and will release in U.S. theaters next summer.

Disney decided to announce details of the movie Thursday, after information of its making started to leak online after a trademark application was filed for the movie title.  The movie is expected to be released in June of 2021 and will be directed by Enrico Casarosa.

The Italian storyboard artist and Director at Pixar is known for his sense of humor and storytelling. If fans want to catch a glimpse of Casaroa’s idea of storytelling, they can check out his blog that features The Venice Chronicles. Casarosa has credits with Pixar in Up, Ratatouille, Robots, and Incredibles 2.

Casarosa released a statement, “This is a deeply personal story for me, not only because it’s set on the Italian Riviera where I grew up, but because at the core of this film is a celebration of friendship. Childhood friendships often set the course of who we want to become and it is those bonds that are at the heart of our story in Luca.”

He added that the film will be a story of a summer adventure that affects Luca and changes him.

The film is about a young boy who is living on the Italian Riviera and his adventures with his new best friend. One secret is revealed that puts his friendship in jeopardy and there is a sea monster from a submarine level world.

This story is set to release almost seven months to the date after Disney’s Soul. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic Disney had to postpone the original release date from summer of 2020.

Soul will release November 20, 2020 and Luca will release on June 18, 2021. Both films are expected to be released in theaters.
