With lockdowns returning sporadically throughout the country, one national pastime runs the risk of extinction: Movie Theaters. Popcorn Talk previously delved into the precarious position the industry has found itself in, you can read that article here; but what about the future of theaters? Where do we go from here?

Ōma Cinema may have just built the blueprint. The Ōma,set to launch in Paris in 2021, is already inherently socially distanced. Though not designed with considerations for the pandemic in the plans, the layout of the Ōma is perfectly suited to the era of Covid-19. Check out this promotional video with a digital rendering of their design below!

“This ‘theatre box’ design means not only is every seat the best in the house, but its innovative concept automatically means people aren’t sitting in such close proximity… Thinking differently about the big screen means that the medium can continue to thrive.” Rob Arthur, co-founder of The Big Picture Cinema Consultants, explained to This is Money

The website of the Ōma describes their designs as introducing “a new era of movie theater.” But some people on Twitter wanted to remind everyone that the designs felt familiar:

There will be an interview with the Ōma team during the CJ Cinema Summit this upcoming Thursday, July 23, at 9 a.m. PST.
