Host & Producer Marielou Mandl (@MarielouMandl) interviews Production Designer, Seth Reed!

ABOUT DAVID CIERI:

He’s a super talented composer, just dropped a new soundtrack today; a compilation soundtrack that celebrates his decade working with Ken Burns/Lynn Novick and Florentine Films documentaries including ‘The Vietnam War’, ‘The Roosevelts’, ‘Prohibition’, ‘Baseball’ and ‘The Address’. Ken could certainly choose any composer in the world for his films but he returns to David again and again. The title of the album is ‘Notes from the Underscore: 10 Years with Florentine Films’. Here is a link for your review: https://access.ropeadope.com/david-cieri.

We are also promoting David’s score to ‘Oklahoma City’, that was nominated for a Primetime Emmy award for Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking. The film explores the intertwined narratives of the worst domestic terrorist attack in the U.S and the anti-government movement that inspired the actions of Timothy McVeigh, including two standoffs with law enforcement with tragic outcomes – Ruby Ridge and the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas.  The music dutifully, gently and deftly helps with the storytelling, which balances between then horrors of the Oklahoma City attack and the backstory leading up to it.

Recently, David contributed several hours of score to ‘The Vietnam War’ (along with Trent Reznor/ Atticus Ross and Yo-Yo Ma and Silk Road). He spent three weeks in Vietnam prior to beginning work on the project, taking in the sounds and music of the region, some of which he incorporated into the score. The documentary averaged 6.7M Viewers For PBS and reached 34M In Live+7 ratings. The premiere episode of ‘The Vietnam War’ was the top-performing PBS’ telecast since the finale of ‘Downton Abbey’ and is the highest-streamed series opener in PBS history. The doc has also been licensed by 21 broadcasters in 43 countries.

This fall, David released ‘White Dust’, a jazz album with Pulitzer-winning poet Yusef Komunyakaa, a recipient of the 1994 Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award. The New York Times listed their song ‘Dolphy’s Aviary’ among their new and notable tracks: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/01/arts/music/playlist-u2-maroon-5-sza-pharrell-williams.html.

Host & Producer Marielou Mandl (@MarielouMandl) interviews Composer, Nathan Barr!

ABOUT NATHAN BARR:

Nathan Barr has scored all six seasons of HBO’s Emmy-winning and Fan-Favorite series, TRUE BLOOD, and is currently working on the final season.  Nate has also lent his musical talents to FX’s THE AMERICANS and Netflix’s HEMLOCK GROVE. The two hit series have garnered him Emmy nods for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Musicin 2013. That gives Barr the distinction of being the first composer to ever have a double nomination in the Main Title category in the same year.

Barr, who began his career with Hans Zimmer, has composed music for more than 30 feature films in addition to his television experience.  The Topanga Canyon-based composer has worked with Alan Ball, gore-horror master Eli Roth, and many other highly respected directors. Roth and Barr have collaborated on HEMLOCK GROVE and five films: Dimension Films and Vivendi Entertainment’s GRINDHOUSE, Screen Gems and Lionsgate’s HOSTEL,HOSTEL 2, CABIN FEVER, and Lionsgate’s THE LAST EXORCISM.

In 2012, Barr composed original music for Lionsgate’s comedy THE BIG WEDDING, which starred Robert De Niro, Diane Keaton, Susan Sarandon, Robin Williams, Amanda Seyfried, Katherine Heigl, and Topher Grace.

In 2011, Barr scored IFC Films’ THE LEDGE, a drama/thriller starring Liv Tyler and Terrance Howard, and directed by Matthew Chapman. It premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival.  Also among Barr’s diverse credits:  20th Century Fox’s SHUTTER, Warner Bros.’ THE DUKES OF HAZZARD, and Film for Thought’s HOOD TO COAST, a documentary that follows four teams on their epic journey to conquer the world’s largest relay race.

Barr began studying music in Tokyo, Japan at four years old.  He grew up surrounded by eclectic music ranging from Kabuki Theater to the sounds of his mother performing on the koto and piano, and his father playing the banjo, guitar and shakuhachi.

His interest in music was further influenced by extensive travels around the world, where he experienced music ranging from Bali’s Kecak Orchestras to China’s Beijing Opera.  Barr went on to study at Skidmore College, and toured Italy and Switzerland with the Juilliard Cello Ensemble in the summer of 1993.  He also briefly played guitar and electric cello with the industrial rock group, V.A.S.T., before heading out to LA to begin his career in film music.

In addition to writing his scores, he performs many of the instruments heard in his compositions, and is skilled in many styles and genres ranging from orchestral to rock.  Barr is also known for his collection and inclusion of rare and unusual instruments from around the world such as:  a human bone trumpet from Tibet, dismantled pianos, a rare Glass Armonica, gourd cellos, and the gem of his collection, the 3 manual, 19 rank Wurlitzer Theater Organ that lived on the scoring stage at 20th Century Fox from 1928-1994, and can be heard in countless films from “The Sound Of Music” to “Patton” to “Star Trek.”

Barr was among a group of prolific composers who attended the renowned and respected 2011 Ubeda film Festival in Spain, where Nathan performed his music to True Blood with a small ensemble and film composer Randy Edelman conducting. He also joined 24 film, TV and video game composers in the Symphony of Hope to raise money for the victims of last year’s earthquake in Haiti. The CD was released in September 2011, and hit Amazon.com’s top-25 chart of new classical releases.

Tree Adams – Composer | On The Fly Filmmaking

Marielou Mandl interviews filmmakers and artists, from different facets of the industry, and discuss their involvements with production. Here you will learn free tips and tricks of filmmaking that they do not teach you in film school, and then you too can produce a movie!

Host & Producer Marielou Mandl (@MarielouMandl) interviews Composer, Tree Adams!

ABOUT TREE ADAMS:

I write music for a living.  Typically, a composition forms in my head before I even pick up an instrument and often, the center piece of an idea will evolve by experimenting with a sound or a piece of gear in my studio in the initial stages of the process.  Although my primary skills as a performer are as a singer and a guitarist, I employ a much more expansive palette for my adventures in film, games and television.

I’ve spent a lot of time on the road as a touring musician and still play live.  I draw a great deal from that experience and from the context of ensemble recording.  While I enjoy the mad scientist/alchemist side of being in the studio and manipulating soundscapes by myself, I am also a big believer in collaborating with other musicians and the magic that comes from that dialog: air being pushed in a room through a particular tube mic pre, the distinct and unique character of a performance etc.  It has been a wonderful adventure so far and I still get excited as I embark on each new gig.

The musical style of my recent projects run the gamut: a haunting battle score for Jason Rothenberg’s THE 100 (CW.) The score is rife with middle eastern colors and epic orchestral themes. Ken Biller’s international espionage thriller, LEGENDS (TNT) features a more minimalist approach combining solo cello and electronic soundscapes. For the John Hertzfeld’s redemption film “REACH ME” (MIllenium Films), a traditional orchestral score.  A gritty rock score for “CALIFORNICATION” (Showtime), an urgent cerebral score for the crime drama, “PERCEPTION” (TNT) a high energy electronica score for action/thriller “RUN” (Millenium Films.) A dusty western score for “SWELTER” and hip hop for Denis Leary and Bob Fisher’s comedy “SIRENS” (USA).

I’ve done gigs in every style imaginable: thrillers, comedies, dramas, horror, action, electronica, hip hop, rock, jazz… you name it.  I’ve done a great deal of work writing and producing songs, recording actors and dealing with pre-records.  Bottom line, I cover a lot of ground with these different projects and in the process, I get the opportunity to make music with some incredibly talented individuals.

I wrote my first song when I was 7 years old, suffice it to say it sucked but the point is that I’ve been writing music for the better part of three or four decades.  Early on, I had classical training, then somewhere along the way I heard Hendrix at which point I decided this music thing might be fun. Nowadays I spend a great deal of time collaborating with filmmakers and so I deal with music as it applies to storytelling.

Thanks for listenin.’
