#AMA100 – Heat (1995) Review | Action Movie Anatomy

#AMA100. Ben and Andrew break down the greatest shootout in film history as well as the first Deniro Pacino scene ever in this 100th episode celebration. Heat is more than movie. It’s an experience.  Follow the show at @AMAPodcast and the hosts @BenBatemanMedia & @AndrewGhai!

Heat is a 1995 American crime film written, produced and directed by Michael Mann, and starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Val Kilmer. De Niro plays Neil McCauley, a professional thief, while Pacino plays Lt. Vincent Hanna, a LAPD robbery-homicide detective tracking down McCauley’s crew. The story is based on the former Chicago police officer Chuck Adamson‘s pursuit during the 1960s of a criminal named McCauley, after whom De Niro’s character is named.

Heat was a critical and commercial success, grossing $67 million in the United States and $187 million worldwide (about $295 million in 2017) against a $60 million budget. It was well received by critics. The film-critic aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reports 86% positive reviews, calling the film “an engrossing crime drama that draws compelling performances from its stars and confirms Michael Mann’s mastery of the genre.”

Armageddon (1998) Review | Action Movie Anatomy

Action Movie Anatomy hosts Ben Bateman and Andrew Ghai welcome John Rocha to break down 1998’s Armageddon!

Armageddon is a 1998 American science fiction disaster film directed by Michael Bay, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, and released by Touchstone Pictures. The film follows a group of blue-collardeep-core drillers sent by NASA to stop a gigantic asteroid on a collision course with Earth. It features an ensemble cast including Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck, Billy Bob Thornton, Liv Tyler, Owen Wilson, Will Patton, Peter Stormare, William Fichtner, Michael Clarke Duncan, Keith David, and Steve Buscemi.

Armageddon opened in theaters only two and a half months after the similar asteroid impact-based film Deep Impact, which starred Robert Duvall and Morgan Freeman. Armageddon fared better at the box office, while astronomers described Deep Impact as being more scientifically accurate. Armageddon was an international box-office success despite generally negative reviews from critics, becoming the highest-grossing film of 1998 worldwide.

Cabaret Theater Show Discussion – Broadway Breakdown

Hosts Briana Phipps and Jacque Borowski discuss the play Cabaret.

Cabaret is a musical based on a book written by Christopher Isherwood, music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. The 1966 Broadway production became a hit, inspiring numerous subsequent productions in London and New York, as well as the 1972 film by the same name.

It is based on John Van Druten‘s 1951 play I Am a Camera, which was adapted from the short novelGoodbye to Berlin (1939) by Christopher Isherwood. Set in 1931 Berlin as the Nazis are rising to power, it is based in nightlife at the seedy Kit Kat Klub, and revolves around young American writer Cliff Bradshaw and his relationship with 19-year-old English cabaret performer Sally Bowles.

A sub-plot involves the doomed romance between German boarding house owner Fräulein Schneider and her elderly suitor Herr Schultz, a Jewish fruit vendor. Overseeing the action is the Master of Ceremonies at the Kit Kat Klub. The club serves as a metaphor for ominous political developments in late Weimar Germany.
