Emily Robinson talks Virgin Territory on iTalk Movies

iTalk movies is a long-form interview series featuring leading members of the film community. In this episode, our host Blake V interviews Emily Robinson in studio about Virgin Territory on the Popcorn Talk Network.

Emily Robinson is a 17 year old first time filmmaker. She wrote, directed, produced and stars in her first short film, Virgin Territory.  Emily, usually in front of the camera, loved this first experience as a writer/director.  Emily knew she wanted to cast Michelle Clunie (Queer as Folk) as Harper and Mel Shimkovitz (Transparent) as Jordan. She sent them each a script, they both agreed that they loved it and wanted their respective roles. Emily committed $10,000 of her money to front the project and in September started the production process. She reviewed over 70 tapes from various cinematographers, meeting with 12 in-person to discuss the script and her vision.  It was an incredibly difficult decision, but, Kay Madsen seemed to be the perfect fit. Her first hire. Emily and her producer Debbie Von Ahrens continued the process to hire the team, went to SAG-AFTRA meetings on production, called friends and various insurance and productions companies to learn as much as possible about the process.

Filming was set for November 27, 2015, a 4 day shoot, a SAG-AFTRA short film agreement with a cast of 3 and a production team of 11. Once shot, Emily was going to do a Kickstarted campaign to help cover post-production.

Kickstarter- launched on January 27th at 10am, asking for $6,000, she had 30 days to reach that goal. The goal was reached in 5 hours!!!!! Stretch-goals were then explained and after one month $17,583 was raised on Kickstarter. Although many people that Emily knew committed to her Kickstarter campaign, there were many, including at the Associate Producer level ($2,500) that she did not know, but they follow her on social media and know her acting work.

After everything was shot, Emily continued working with Tucker Marolf in Editing, then John M. Davis on sound and Patrick Taylor for Color correction, Virgin Territory was completely finished by March 1, 2016. Since then Emily created the poster and the trailer while Debbie started submitting to the film festivals; Virgin Territory made its debut at OUTFEST Los Angeles LGBTQ Festival- July 7 – 17th.

Tron Review | Video Game Movie Anatomy

Video Game Movie Anatomy hosts break down Video Game inspired movies to answer the age old question: DO GAMES MAKE GOOD MOVIES?!?! In today’s episode, hosts Mark Donica and Stacey Shuttleworth discuss the Sci-Fi Video Game Classic, Tron!

Tron is a 1982 American science fiction film written and directed by Steven Lisberger, based on a story by Lisberger and Bonnie MacBird, and produced by Walt Disney Productions. The film stars Jeff Bridges as a computer programmer who is transported inside the software world of a mainframe computer where he interacts with programs in his attempt to escape. Bruce Boxleitner, David Warner, Cindy Morgan, and Barnard Hughes star in supporting roles.

Tron was released on July 9, 1982 in 1,091 theaters in the United States. The film was a moderate success at the box office, and received positive reviews from critics who praised the groundbreaking visuals and acting. However, the storyline was criticized at the time for being incoherent. Tron received nominations for Best Costume Design and Best Sound at the 55th Academy Awards, and received the Academy Award for Technical Achievement fourteen years later. Over time, Tron developed into a cult film and eventually spawned a franchise, which consists of multiple video games, comic books and an animated television series. A sequel titled Tron: Legacy directed by Joseph Kosinski was released on December 17, 2010, with Bridges and Boxleitner reprising their roles, and Lisberger acting as producer.

Les Miserables Film Discussion – Broadway Breakdown

Hosts Briana Phipps, Jacque Borowski, and Alexis Torres discuss the Broadway Musical Les Miserables.

Les Misérables is a 2012 British-French-American epic romantic musical period drama film produced byWorking Title Films and distributed by Universal Pictures. The film is based on the musical of the same nameby Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg which is in turn based on the 1862 French novel by Victor Hugo. The film is directed by Tom Hooper, scripted by William Nicholson, Boublil, Schönberg, and Herbert Kretzmer, and stars an ensemble cast led by Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, and Amanda Seyfried.

The film tells the story of Jean Valjean, an ex-convict who, inspired by a kindly bishop, decides to turn his life around. He eventually becomes mayor of a town in France and owner of a factory in that town. He is always alert to the risk of being captured again by police inspector Javert, who is ruthless in hunting down law-breakers, believing they cannot change for the better. One of Valjean’s factory workers, Fantine, blames him for her being cast into a life of prostitution. When she dies, he feels responsible and agrees to take care of her illegitimate daughter Cosette — though he must first escape Javert. Later, when Cosette is grown, they are swept up in the political turmoil in Paris, which culminates in the Paris Uprising of 1832.

Attempts to adapt a Les Misérables film from the stage musical had taken place since the late 1980s. In June 2011, from a screenplay by Nicholson, production of the film officially began with Hooper and Mackintosh serving as director and producer, and the main characters were cast later that year. Principal photographycommenced in March 2012, and took place in various English locations, including Greenwich, London, Chatham, Winchester, Bath and Portsmouth; as well as in Gourdon, France.

Les Misérables premiered in London 5 December 2012, and was released 25 December 2012 in the United States and 11 January 2013 in the United Kingdom.[2][8][10] The film received generally favourable[11] reviews, with many critics praising the cast, and Jackman, Hathaway, Eddie Redmayne and Samantha Barks being the most often singled out for praise. The film won the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for Jackman and the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture for Hathaway.

It also won four British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA), including the Best Actress in a Supporting Role(Hathaway). It received eight Academy Award nominations including Best Picture (the first musical nominated since 2002’s winner Chicago) and Best Actor for Jackman, and won three, for Best Sound Mixing, Best Makeup and Hairstyling and Best Supporting Actress for Hathaway.

Star Trek (2009) Review | Action Movie Anatomy

Action Movie Anatomy hosts Ben Bateman and Andrew Ghai break down Star Trek!

Star Trek is a 2009 American science fiction adventure film directed by J. J. Abrams, written by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman and distributed by Paramount Pictures. It is the 11th film of the Star Trek film franchise and is also a reboot that features the main characters of the original Star Trek television series, portrayed by a new cast and the first in the reboot series. The film follows James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto) aboard the USS Enterprise as they combat Nero (Eric Bana), a Romulan from their future who threatens the United Federation of Planets. The story takes place in an alternate reality because of time travel by both Nero and the original Spock (Leonard Nimoy). The alternate timeline was created in an attempt to free the film and the franchise from established continuity constraints while simultaneously preserving original story elements.

Brotherhood: Final Fantasy XV Review | Otaku Movie Anatomy

Otaku Movie Anatomy hosts review Brotherhood: Final Fantasy XV!

Brotherhood: Final Fantasy XV  is a 2016 original net animation series directed by Soichi Masui, produced by Akio Ofuji, written by Yuniko Ayana, and composed for by Yasuhisa Inoue and Susumi Akizuki. Co-produced by Square Enix and A-1 Pictures, it is based on the setting and story of the 2016 video game Final Fantasy XV, which is thematically connected to the Fabula Nova Crystallis subseries. Brotherhood is set within the events of Final Fantasy XV, and details the backstories of main protagonist Noctis Lucis Caelum and those closest to him.

Brotherhood was made as part of a planned multimedia expansion of Final Fantasy XV without the need to develop a series of games. The series was conceived by Ofuji, basing on his wish to expand upon an in-game reference to Prompto’s difficult childhood. The series’ release began on March 30 and will continue until the release of Final Fantasy XV on September 30. The story focuses on themes of brotherhood and friendship, and was designed to give players glimpses into the personal lives of the characters that would not have fitted well within the game itself.
