INTERNATIONAL NUMBERS
Fox got Alita: Battle Angel out early and strongly in Asia
with $32M while Warner Bros began offshore rollout on The
Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, for $18.1M.
Fox took advantage of the Chinese New Year to push Alita into
South East Asia. This one doesn’t open in North America until

next weekend, and so far reviews on the James Cameron-
produced pic are mixed. But the play here is international,

particularly Asia given the manga source material. Fox is
happy with the results which are from just 11 markets,
especially in Korea where the film came in at No. 2 amid
strong local competition. Overall, Alita is outpacing Maze
Runner (+23%) and Ready Player One (+5%) in like for like
markets and at today’s rates.
Lego blocked together $18.1M in 63 markets, including majors
the UK, Brazil and Spain. Somewhat surprisingly, Lego is not

as well-known a brand overseas, but has certainly lifted its
profile through the four movies WB has released in the past
few years.
Fox also hit a new milestone in Japan this weekend
as Bohemian Rhapsody crossed $100M. This is the first of the
studio’s titles to hit the mark since Avatar and the first foreign
pic since 2017’s Beauty And The Beast. Bo Rhap is up for seven
BAFTAs here in London tonight and star Rami Malek has been
putting in appearances at pre-ceremony soirées around town
this weekend. In other milestones, Sony’s Escape
Room topped $100M overseas.
Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s How To Train Your
Dragon: The Hidden World was the overall leader at the
international box office — not counting the China movies. The
weekend was good for $38.2M to lift the overseas cume
to $138.7. Also, Aquaman got his fins wet in Japan, the final
market for the Warner Bros/DC hero. With $6M, it opened
No. 1 to cume $792M offshore. The global tally is $1.12B.

Glass Is Showing Cracks – Box Office Breakdown (Feb 3rd, 2019)

INTERNATIONAL NUMBERS
Expanding to a handful of key markets this weekend,
Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s How To Train Your
Dragon: The Hidden World swooped into the top spot on
the international box office chart with a $40.2Mframe. This
lifts the overseas running total to $84.4M from 41 markets so
far in release. Universal took a long lead on Dragon
3 offshore, going out in Australia just after the New Year to
take advantage of the peak summer holiday season there
Bowing in 23 international markets this session, the Dean
DeBlois-directed HTTYD3was No. 1 in 20 of those new homes.
It played like a fury in Mexico with $7.7M at 865 locations for
the biggest launch weekend ever of a DWA title. The UK
bowed to $6.8M at No. 1 and ahead of both prior installments.
Italy is also tracking well ahead of those two movies while
Brazil’s hold was a terrific -27% at No. 1 for $10.3M after three
frames. Oz leads all play at $15.5M.

Last week’s offshore leader, M Night Shyamalan’s Glass —
which Disney is releasing abroad — dipped 49% in the 3rd
session. It added $12.2M in 54 markets for an overseas cume
of $110.3M, still running marginally below the previous
Eastrail 177 trilogy entry, Split. The worldwide total will pass
$200M once today’s actuals are finalized, or with tomorrow’s
numbers.
Behind Glass, five-time Oscar nominee Green Book, which is
going out internationally via a mix of Lionsgate and Amblin
Partners, had a combined $11.9Mweekend for a $25.5M cume
to date.
China has helped push Fox’s Deadpool 2 ahead of the
original Deadpool’s worldwide gross.
With $784Mglobal, DP2 is now the highest-grossing film in
the X-Men franchise.
It’s also worth highlighting the China performance of
Sony’s Escape Roomwhere the reported $9M budget pic has
now grossed $33.5M after three weekends. The week-to-week
drop was just 17%. While there hasn’t been much new blood
ahead of the February 5 holiday, the performance is notable in
that few mystery-thrillers like this see the inside of movie
theaters in China. That has raised curiosity along with a
cultural resonance given the popularity of escape rooms in the
big cities.
In milestones, Warner Bros’ Aquaman has topped $1.1B global
($783.4M international) and opens in Japan on Friday. Also
from WB, Creed II topped $200M global this round while
Disney’s Ralph Breaks The Internet has now surpassed the
original Wreck-It Ralph both domestically and internationally

as it closes in on $500M global.

During a busy post-holiday holdover/expansion frame
overseas, Warner Bros’ Aquaman showed his muscle again,
cruising well past the $900M mark globally as he charts a
course for $1B. After holding the No. 1 spot at
the international box office for four straight weekends,
however (and as expected), he ceded the slot to
Paramount’s Bumblebee which buzzed into China on Friday.
The yellow Bug grossed $82.7M in 63 markets this session,
including China where it revved up with a No. 1 start of
$59.4M at 9,180 locations. With $6.1M from 584 Middle
Kingdom IMAX screens, Bumblebee logged the format’s 3rd
best January start there ever.
Transformers movies are typically strong in China, although
2017’s The Last Knightdidn’t catch fire the way Age Of
Extinction had in 2014. Bumblebee is a different kind
of Transformers and is connecting with local audiences giving

it positive word of mouth. The Hailee Steinfeld-starrer has
Chinese behemoth Tencent as an investor and co-marketing
partner. It will cross $200M offshore this week.
Behind Bee, Jason Momoa’s heir to Atlantis added $56.2M at
the international box office this weekend, swelling the
worldwide cume to $940.7M. Of that, $681M is from
overseas where the James Wan-directed origins story
topped The Dark Knight Riseson Friday to become the biggest
DC movie ever abroad.
The offshore drop on Aquaman this session was 41% across 79
markets. Warner Bros’ fish guy is on course for the $1B global
milestone, possibly through next weekend. In
Asia, Aquaman is WB’s highest-grossing movie ever and has
taken $282.8M from China where it’s the No. 2 superhero pic
of all time.
Elsewhere, Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns swept past $250M
global and $100M internationally, led by the UK and Italy. In
the former, Emily Blunt’s version of the magical nanny has
been No. 1 for each of its 17 consecutive days of release.
Also from Disney, Ralph Breaks The Internet broke into some
more key markets during its continued staggered release and
had great results in Italy, Korea and Brazil. The global cume
has now topped $400M.
Universal/Illumination’s The Grinch is closing in on $500M
worldwide this week while Uni/DreamWorks
Animation’s How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden
Worldhad a terrific launch Down Under. The $5.3M debut
came in ahead of Madagascar 3 (+68%), How To Train Your
Dragon 2(+83%), How To Train Your Dragon(+141%)
and Kung Fu Panda 3 (+141%).

And juggernaut Bohemian Rhapsodyhas now crossed $550M
overseas to become Fox International’s 6th highest grossing
movie ever.
